You’re a brand: Building it through social media.

Branding is not just applicable on a product or organization, but it also can be applied on a person. It seems funny, but it is true. For example, Cristiano Ronaldo, who is a soccer player, is not just a name of soccer player anymore. Furthermore, it is a famous brand. Everyone knows him as everyone know ‘Apple’. Many people are addicted with him as many people addicted with ‘Apple’.  Furthermore, the better your image as a brand, the more people want to engage with you, or even you can be a role model.  However, you can build yourself as a brand through social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Lenkedin, & Youtube. Through these social media, you can share your thoughts to the world, update your information, share some pictures of your life and soon.

For example,

This girl shared her ‘unique talent’ through Youtube, in which it’s viewed by 54,066,706 people.

In addition, just be careful with what are you sharing, because it can be harm your image. Moreover, it can be dangerous for you. For example, your negative sharing about a political party makes you hated by those  who support that party. As you are being hated, you can be attacked by them.

Characteristics of successful online stores

In Australia, there are 50.3% of population has shopped online and it has grown 12% from last year (Ray Morgan Research, 2013).  Due to this high market potential, more and more people open their own online store. Furthermore, opening an online store is also has less cost (renting venue cost and wages) compared to open a traditional store. Thus, it is easy for many people to set up their own online store. However, some of following characteristics are required to make a successful online store.

The first characteristic is having short, simple and meaningful brand name and url (web address). By keeping it short and simple, the name of your store can be easily to be remembered. For example, eBay (www.ebay.com), which is the most successful online auction company. It is using short and simple name, so that people can easily to remember its name. Furthermore, the name of your store has to be meaningful. Here, your online store name should represent the products that you sell. By creating meaningful name, it prevents confusion when people visit your store. For example, Wikipedia (ww.wikipedia.com) that offers free encyclopedia online. The word “pedia” at the end of its name is associated with encyclopedia, thus people are easily to know and remember what they are doing.

The second characteristic is having secure, easy and vary transaction methods. By having secure payment methods, this allows your store to built credibility, and it is very important for online stores. Furthermore, the payment methods has to be easy in its process. Complicated process will make customer confuse and unwilling to make another transaction with your store anymore. One of good example of a payment method that your store can use is PayPal. It offers security and easy process. Lastly, having a vary methods is also making easier for customer to make a transaction. Imagine if you do not have the payment method that your potential customers prefer, it is guarantee that your customers will find another stores that offered the payment method that they can use.

The third method is having easy navigation in your online store. It is important for customers to be able fully understanding what is in your website. If your website is complicated and confusing (e.g. unclear link to the other pages, duplication in information, and confusing design), it makes your customers difficult to find what they want and finally they will run away from your stores.

The fourth method is advertising your online store. Even though it might require some money to advertise your online store, but it is worth it, especially for new stores. By advertising your store, it will increase you store’s awareness, which expected to generate more sales. Furthermore, there are some websites that are good to advertise your store. For example, a social media called “Facebook”. In this website, you are allowed to advertise your store in specific target audience at cheap price.

However, there are still a lot of characteristics that can make an online store to be successful. The information that I gave to you is based on the summary of these following website and my knowledge.

Facebook is a new opportunity for marketers

Do you have Facebook? It might be the question that should not be questioned. In Australia, among 23,154,143 population (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2013) there are 13,597, 380 active users on Facebook (Internet World Stats, 2013). It means there are more than half of the Australian using Facebook.

Through this fact, Facebook’s presence is a new opportunity for marketers. Why I say it as a new opportunity, because it allow marketers to advertise their products to large audience at cheaper price, even free. It is very contrast with traditional media, such as newspaper, television, magazine, that has limited reach and costly.

On Facebook, marketers can create a page, share a link, photo, and video to advertise their product. Moreover, Facebook also has a feature that allow marketers to advertise their product at minimum price. Here, marketers can set specific target audience based on their location, age, gander, interest, and many other categories. For example, a marketer can target the audience that live in Caulfield with range age 15-22 who is interested with dog.

However, marketers need to realise that mostly of Facebook’s users are young people (Figure 1). Therefore it is not appropriate to use Facebook if the target market is elders. Even though it is cheap, it still cost you and as marketer you have to be wise to use your budget. Otherwise, you are welcome to find another job. 🙂

Now you can make your own shoes!!

People like exclusivity. Thinking about buying a pair of shoes, most of people don’t like if there is someone who wearing the same shoes with them. Moreover, if that shoes is very expensive. For example, what will you feel when you go to a party with your AUD 500 shoes and you find that someone is also wearing it. You might feel uncomfortable and ashamed. 😦

However, internet presence has solved this problem. Furthermore, through internet now you can design your own shoes. Shoes of prey (http://www.shoesofprey.com) is one of good example that use this technique. through it website, you can start designing your own shoes by selecting the style, such as ballet flats, mid heels, high heels, flat sandals, etc. Moreover, you can put some decoration and choose your favourite colour for your shoes. After all, you don’t need afraid go to party with your shoes, because the probability for wearing the same shoes is very small, unless you design it together. Happy designing your own shoes guys!! 🙂
